Reading your email for domain hosted at Tuxic

You can read your email in three ways: via webmail, via POP or via IMAP. In all cases use tuxic.nl as the servername.

Webmail is available for all users at https://tuxic.nl/mail. We use this URL for all domains because it is protected with SSL, hence the https. The webmail we use is called Squirrelmail and has been around as a webmail client for a long time.

POP3 means that you download all mail from our server every time you read your mail. This is most likely the case if you always use the same computer to read your email. A well known email program is Thunderbird. We strongly advise not to use any version of Microsoft Outlook, since there are lot of virusses around that abuse Outlook to get a virus onto your computer. Configure Thunderbird to use SSL for connections and set tuxic.nl as the POP server.
mozillasettingsIMAP can be used with a local email client like Thunderbird as well, but the difference is that email is stored on the server. This makes it easer to switch between Webmail and IMAP, you can use both and still search in your older mails. If you read your email on one computer most of the time, but also on others every now and then, IMAP is a comfortable way.

Outgoing email (SMTP) can be sent via Tuxic or to your ADSL-provider. If you use your computer at the same place all the time, we recommend you fill in the smtp-server of your ADSL-provider. If you travel around with your computer, you can use tuxic.nl as the smtp-server. Note that this only works if your mail client supports TLS and authentication!

In thunderbird, you configure SMTP like in this image. You can also choose TLS if SSL does not work.smtp

If you cannot get SMTP through Tuxic to work, use telnet to see if you the connection is blocked by a local firewall:

jaap@flying:~$ telnet tuxic.nl 25
Trying 82.94.255.120...
Connected to tuxic.nl.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 mail.tuxic.nl ESMTP Postfix (Debian/GNU)

If you type "telnet tuxic 25" and you do not get the last line, your connection is probably blocked by some firewall.
